New screencast

I’ve just uploaded an introductory screencast to the screenshots page. In it, I introduce the basics of starting with a new, blank installation of Tracks, adjusting the preferences, adding contexts, projects and actions, and editing actions. In due course, I’ll add more screencasts on specific aspects, like using tags, the tickler, and the statistics page.

It’s the first screencast I’ve done with a voiceover, so please forgive the stumbling, mumbling parts. Watching the screencast, you might marvel at the fact that I lecture for a living. The thing is, I’m used to a live audience (except at 9am Monday lectures, where the audience is mostly asleep), and talking to myself felt distinctly odd wink I also seemed to be channelling Bill Lumbergh from Office Space, with my “let’s go ahead and…”. I don’t know why, because I almost never say that in real life. Anyway, enjoy, and try not to laugh too hard.

Good quick intro. It would be nice to list the duration of the screencast next to the link since some people may want to know what they’re getting into.

macguide: Good idea - I’ve just done that.

Nice screencast.  I’m still a bit confused about the deferred actions section.  How can I defer an action?

Nitin: I’m going to do a screencast about deferred action and the tickler at some point, but it’s fairly straightforward. In the new action form on the home page, there’s a input box labelled ‘Show from’. If you enter a date in the future into this box, then the action you add will be added to the Tickler. You’ll see a green flash message appear telling you that the action was added to the Tickler, but it won’t appear on the home page. If you then use the navigation bar at the top of the page to go to the Tickler, you’ll see that the action you’ve just added is there, with coloured badge telling you that the action will be shown in 14 days (for example). When the date you entered in ‘Show from’ arrives, the action will be removed from the Tickler and will appear on your home page.

If you’ve got an existing action that you decide you’d like to defer, just open the edit form by clicking the pencil icon, and add a date in the ‘Show from’ box.

Thanks!  That makes sense now.

Now, if I could get tracks to work on my hosting provider’s server.  Do you have a published v1.5 mysql schema?
