When the music moves you

Filed under: Music, — bsag @ 07:01 PM

I’ve got used to putting up with the awful techno dreck that seems to get played in most gyms, so I thought I might be dreaming when I heard Pink Floyd as I started my workout this morning. I rowed to ‘Comfortably Numb’, which seemed utterly appropriate in the circumstances. Obviously someone with taste had broken in to the music system. I had the best workout I’d had for ages, lifting heavier weights and doing better in my aerobic workout. Coincidence? I think not.

No doubt, in the managers office they were playing "Money".

I can never stand hearing music I really care about dribble out of the terrible speakers that are universally installed in shops and public places, accompanied by the interruptions all such places are saturated with.----- Techno I might even enjoy-- I don't know why gyms seem to be hooked on disco, shrieking and unending bass.

    iPod, iPod, iPod.

Off to see David Gilmour at the Albert Hall on May 29th. Necessary devotions. Expensive necessary devotions.

Techno, eh? That'd be an improvment over the inanity of VibeFM that forms the soundtrack to my sessions in the gym.

When they're playing awful music, have you tried asking them to turn it down? The gym I attend are very understanding of iPod users so often if everyone is plugged into their iPods/MP3 players there's no music playing at all. Bliss.

If you've actually seen The Wall, "Comfortably numb" doesn't seem quite so 'comforting'?

Milan Ilnyckyj: I'd normally be right with you there, but Pink Floyd sounds good even on horrible equipment. Quality will out...

Tony Iovino: Some techno I can cope with, but this sounds like the kind of thing I would write in Garage Band (that's a bad thing).

Jonathan Briggs: grin Well, maybe not. It was the Uni gym, and they don't charge an arm and a leg for membership.

jim w: Ooo, now I'm very jealous. You lucky thing, you.

    steve: Another techno fan? Gah.

Big Floyd Fan: ...or actually listened to the lyrics. I know, it's not at all comforting, and that's why it was so appropriate for the hell that is the rowing machine.

Helen Rayner: I'm such a pathetic person that I've never tried that. I also don't bring my iPod either, for fear that I'd manage to hang myself with the headphone cord on some bit of equipment. I'm clumsy enough as it is.

Ours plays trashy frat-party style hip-hop. :( I've asked them to turn it down, but I would still hear it over my own headphones, even with the volume all the way up. Finally, I got these. I cannot recommend them enough!
