Unwise product codenames

I think it's about time that someone told Intel that their codename for their new Pentium 4 processors is not going to play well in the UK. They obviously don't know the John 'Two Jags' Prescott that we all admire so much, or they wouldn't be burdening their technologically advanced, ground-breaking new chips with the name of someone who eats his with brown sauce and a pie.

Actually, you can tell a lot about a company by the codenames it chooses. When I think of Apple, I think of Jaguar, Panther and Tiger: sleek, fast, efficient creatures. And then there's Microsoft's Longhorn: a breed of cattle.

I rest my case.

  1. 1

Then again, maybe Mr. Two-Jags was exactly who they were thinking of. Codenames don't all have to be serious, you know. smile

    • "Deep Thought" : The first chess computer to beat a Grandmaster in tournament play, named after the giant computer in The Hitchiker's Guide To The Galaxy.
    • "Deep Blue" : The famous successor to Deep Thought, renamed because of its ancestor's chronic mispronunciation as "Deep Throat".
    • "Sagan" : Original code name for the Power Mac 7100, in honor of Carl Sagan.
    • "Butthead Astronomer" : Code name for the Power Mac 7100 after Sagan sued, even though he lost.
    • "LAW (Lawyers Are Wimps)" : Code name for the Power Mac 7100 after Sagan sued again, and lost again.
    • "Hedwig," "Lorax," and "Cartman" : Code names for the first three releases of Red Hat Linux 6.----- But, but, wouldn't a dual-G5 running 10.2 be Two Jags?

Aaron: Well, possibly, but somehow I doubt it...

Paul: Groan. That is possibly the worst pun I've heard in a long time :-D
