Contrary to my usual practice of watching or listening to something on TV or radio and then blogging about how brilliant it was when it was all over, I'm actually going to talk about something fantastic in advance, so that you have a sporting chance to see what all the fuss is about.
The National Theatre of Brent are doing one of their unique theatrical productions on BBC Radio 4 at 9pm this Friday: The Messiah. I heard their Complete and Utter History of the Mona Lisa a couple of years ago, and I still laugh when I remember the conversation between Leonardo da Vinci and Botticelli:
Leonardo da Vinci: So what you bin' up to then, Botticelli?
Botticelli: Bin' doin' the paintins.
L: Oh yeah? Which ones you bin' doin' then?
B: Done the Venus.
L: What, on the sofa?
B: Nah, comin' out the shell.
L: Any good?
B: Masterpiece, apparently.
L: How lovely.
For those of you not acquainted with NToB, they are Desmond 'Olivier' Dingle (played by Patrick Barlow), and Raymond Box (John Ramm): two of the most inept thespians (not to mention dodgy historians) you've ever come across. Oh, and they are hilarious. I can't wait to hear how they mangle The Messiah.

Hi, thanks for posting The Arts and How They Was Done. Just discovered that BBC7 repeated All the World's a Globe and I missed it all except the last one. Is anyone able to post these please. Oh and Mona Lisa too if you have it. I would be eternally grateful.by heffalump @ 19/03/2008 4:01 pm • Permalink

I have been posting "The Arts" as they are repeated (one more to go!) and have also posted "The Messiah" & "The Greatest Story Ever Told". I have come across "All the Worlds a Globe" on some torrent sites and will post that too when I have a moment. The quality of "Globe" isn't great but it's something to be getting on with. Maybe someone has a better copy? http://www.divshare.com/download/4011901-c03by theonlyspoon @ 10/04/2008 12:27 pm • Permalink

Dear Mr Spoon, thanks for putting All The World Up as well - downloaded them all at the weekend. They're fantastic - no surprise - particularly the emaciation of women! Have been hunting high and low for Mona Lisa, if I find it I'll post it up for everyone else. Thanks again.by Chris Eddington @ 16/04/2008 10:15 am • Permalink

This is so great, I cannot thank you enough - It's so great to meet other NTOB fans, I just can't understand why they're not more famous, especially when they're showered with awards. Anyway, I can finally feel useful. I've got a copy of the Mona Lisa, iand give me half a chance I'll upload it for you. Would that make it complete?by babybounce @ 18/04/2008 8:43 am • Permalink

Please post Mona Lisa! That would be GREAT!! Where did you get it from??by theonlyspoon @ 18/04/2008 3:22 pm • Permalink

http://www.divshare.com/download/4290273-2b6 The complete and utter history of the mona lisa! I'm really sorry it's not edited, so you hear announcers and the end bit of the archers etc - very authentic. Let me know if there are any problems with the file, and if you want an edited version put up, because that's fine. It's just I know I probably couldn't wait to hear it if I were you, and the extra time spent editing would just be cruel. It's from a repeat on Radio 4 which I ripped from the radio stream. It was my first taste of NTOB so it holds a special place in my heart. Enjoy! and thanks so much for the other filesby babybounce @ 19/04/2008 10:06 am • Permalink

Also - I may have a copy (I do, why am I being coy?) of the NTOB's greatest landmarks of the twentieth century series on ch4. I have never shared a vid before, but I think the more publicity NTOB gets the better, so I'm up for posting it if you're interested. Do you know if it's possible to set up a petition or something to get some of Mr Barlow's work officially released? The BBC comedy website has clips of other stuff he has written (in the style of historical dramatisation programs) and it looks hilarious but probably hasn't been repeated once, it actually pains me that I can't see all of it. Genuine pain. xby babybounce @ 19/04/2008 10:11 am • Permalink

I have spent ages looking for Mona Lisa, so thanks for putting this up - brilliant! And yes please to the Greatest Landmarks, I found this once on Channel 4's site, but the interweb couldn't find anything to download - bums! This time I managed to use my screen-name rather than my real one - or did I?by heffalump @ 19/04/2008 2:51 pm • Permalink

Perhaps it was kept ............someone could find out39
I've uploaded the Sex Interview from the NTOB site as an MP3. Not great quality, nor very long, but I thought I should find something as other people have been so generous. It's here: http://www.divshare.com/download/4305127-b43by heffalump @ 21/04/2008 10:29 am • Permalink

Yay!! Thanks for "Mona Lisa". Sorry to be a fusspot but is there ANY chance that you could post the WAV file rather than the MP3. If not, no worries at all.by theonlyspoon @ 23/04/2008 10:37 pm • Permalink

No - no worries, that's fine. Do you have a preference of quality because I'll be ripping it from the original .ra file, so you have a choice, lol! Out of interest does anyone have any other TV works the NTOB did? or just Patrick Barlow? I took a friend to see the 39 Steps last week - she was naturally converted to the ways of Barlow. The show's got even better/sillier/ridiculous - just how I like it xby babybounce @ 26/04/2008 8:20 am • Permalink

I got a bit excited and didn't check my spelling (embarassed cough) - I believe I meant to say 'Massive Landmarks of the 20th century'. Their costumes are fantastic. xby babybounce @ 02/05/2008 9:47 pm • Permalink

Hi, is it possible to PM people posting on this site? The reason I ask is that I have managed to copy the 4od Massive Landmarks onto DVD and could do some copies, especially for theonlyspoon and babybounce, who've uploaded so much good stuff. They've come out quite well. I don't want to put my email address up here - I'm sure you'll understand why.by heffalump @ 10/05/2008 10:49 am • Permalink

That would be cool heffalump. I'd love to see if the 4oD version is as good as my old VHS. e-mail me at theonlyspoon@hotmail.com and we can sort it out. I have heard (RUMOUR ONLY) that they may be repeating Massive Landmarks this summer on c4. I'll keep my eyes open for it.by theonlyspoon @ 10/05/2008 4:13 pm • Permalink

Hi all! Babybounce, is there any chance of you posting "Mona Lisa" as a standard WAV file. I want to get as good a copy as I can. No worries if you can't. I'm still on the lookout for a better quality version of "All The Worlds A Globe". If I find one I'll let you all know. It's been very quiet around here lately!by theonlyspoon @ 07/06/2008 2:54 am • Permalink

Ello! babybounce, would it be possible to get a standard WAV file version of "Mona Lisa"? I want to get the best quality I can to burn to CD. Many thanks. If it's not possible no worries. Still on the lookout for a better quality version of "Globe" will let you all know if I find one. Been a bit quiet around here recently!by theonlyspoon @ 08/06/2008 9:44 am • Permalink

Oh my goodness! I am so sorry I haven't done that yet, I'll try my best tonight, but definitely this week. Argh! So disorganised. Also good news I have found some old radio rips of Globe on the great maze and miscellany that is my harddrive! Only a few episodes but it should be at a better quality than the torrent that's been floating around. Also! - BBC7 have started repeating 'Compleat Works' again. I don't know why we're getting spoiled by this Barlow overload, but I'm not complaining. I've already missed the first episode (D'oh!), but I can get the rest and will happily upload if people wantby babybounce @ 09/06/2008 11:36 am • Permalink
