Strange messages

Filed under: Random Mumblings, — bsag @ 06:06 PM

I got a text message from a stranger on my mobile this morning. Apparently, Liz was given my number by Louise, and she was wondering if I wanted to go out for a drink. I see three possibilities:

  • I have a secret female admirer. Interesting, but very unlikely.
  • It’s spam. I’ve never got SMS spam before, but there’s always a first time.
  • Someone keyed in a wrong number.

If it was a wrong number, Liz is probably—at this very moment—agonising over why the object of her affections didn’t text her back. Did he/she get it? Did he/she not want to go out with her? I would text her back and put her out of her misery, but for the second possibility.

Sounds like an accident to me. I used to get occasional errors like this on my cell phone (and put a message by accident on someone elses recently). All the text-spam I have seen is quite explicit. Byt not telling the girl you could be breaking her heart - and you could be missing out on an interesting experience smile----- I've received a couple of messages on my mobile voicemail, one in Italian, one in what sounded like an Arabic language. I'm fluent in neither. Like you, I did wonder about replying in case someone missed something important, but then I decided that it's not my fault they can't dial straight...

I've had quite a bit of text spam. I've never answered it, as I don't want them to know for sure that my number's in use, of course. I have had something similar to what you mention, with a name, etc, but I can't remember the specifics of it.

If you feel curious and you want to do something about it, just in case there's a real person waiting for a reply - and that would be my feeling, too, unfortunately - why don't you phone the number that it was sent from, using a payphone just in case?

the other day a couple of my friends told me of a spoof text message doing the rounds at the moment, but it has to be sent by someone you know [which, i think, makes it worse]. the message reads something like:

'hi, it's me, i'm running out of battery. please call me urgently on this number...020 something and ask for liz.'

because it's from a friend, you obviously call the number, which turns out to be for buckingham palace -- they've set up a special answerphone message because of this! some friend it is that sends you that text, eh?

Hmm. It is beginning to sound more suspicious. If I get the time, I might try calling it from a phone box, but I'm not sure that I can really be bothered.

dvd: That really is mean. I bet the staff at Buckingham Palace aren't too chuffed about it either. I've had lunch in the Palace (in the staff quarters) -- not that it was really anything to write home about.

Can you remember the phone number, then? And is it the same as the one in your text message?
