Static

Filed under: Random Mumblings, — bsag @ 07:03 PM

I don’t know what it is about the weather today, but I’ve been generating massive amounts of static electricity in the office. The combination of dry, cold air, an acrylic fleece and a synthetic carpet must be nearly optimal conditions for generating static, because every time I touch anything in the office (light switch, sockets, poor shocked PowerBook), sparks crackle from my fingers like I’m some kind of human Van der Graaff generator.

It’s got to the point where I’m aversively conditioned towards metal objects. Every time I look at the light switch I feel a little knot of fear. I actually contemplated not switching the lights off when I left the office this evening, because it hurts. I can see that I’m going to have to wear a very long version of one of those grounding straps around my wrist, with the other end attached to the radiator.

could it possibly have anything to do with our neurotransmitters in our body. this would make some kid a great science project!

I get shocked when putting coins in the vending machine, when pointing to something on the computer screen, when touching our cubicle walls and filing cabinets, and also when accidentally touching other coworkers. No one else does this at my work. Help!!!!

The best cure I've found is to change your shoes/ sole type. If your soles are plastic based you can gain and store a lot of charge very quickly on synthetic carpets. This can be fun as you can intentionally zap you work mates on the ear!

Leather soles seem to be the best for preventing this build up.

This has been happening alot to me, too. The craziest thing happened just tonight to me...I got shocked wiping a little tarter sauce off the top of a plastic bottle...

How in the heck can that happen????

tips: 1. take off your shoes and work in your socks if you can; then you will be grounded. 2. wear a ring or carry a paperclip in your hand and touch metal with that. 3. touch the door frame or wooden door itself before the metal handle/knob and that will disperse the charge and ground you without out the shock. 4. use a humidifier. 5. live in miami beach. 6. yada yada
