Spring forward…

Filed under: Culture, — bsag @ 07:03 PM

…or in my case, shuffle forward. I hate the day that the clocks go forwards–I feel cheated out of an hour of sleep, even if I go to bed an hour early the night before, and I feel out of sorts all day. It didn’t help that I had a project to finish (for some value of ‘finish’) and consequently had a lot to get done today.

I much prefer Autumn, with the clocks going backwards. Still, you can’t do that at both ends of the year–it just wouldn’t work, would it? I’m too tired to think about it.

Wow. My first response was, "You're a week early!", but then I discovered that Europe and the US change at different times! (http://webexhibits.org/daylightsaving/b.html)

To add to my confusion, I'm in Beijing, which doesn't have Daylight Saving Time at all!

What a silly world. smile----- i guess the british are more frugal... not sure what they do with that extra week of daylight, thought...

To add insult to injury I was dragged out of my bed early by work, and had to go in because the time change had made (some of) the computers go haywire.

Still I do like it being light in the evenings. The whole thing is a bit weird, when you think about it nothing real has changed. All that has happened is that we've altered the clocks a bit, which is purely conventional, yet it feels quite different.

We used to save up our extra hour in the Autumn (by not changing the clocks in the house for a while) and then go off and spend an hour-long millisecond somewhere during the afternoon. Sounds a bit silly now...

Daylight Saving(s) Time Learned a lot about Daylight Saving Time today. Started off here, when I noticed this girl talking about changing her clocks. "But you're an hour early!," I thought. But then I looked here. And here. Did anyone else not know...

John G: It's a fairly weird thing all round. If we just used the sun to tell the time and arrange our lives, we wouldn't have to worry about it (and we'd get much more sleep in the winter - in temperate, northern hemisphere countries, anyway).

stacy: I think that the answer is that we spend the extra week of daylight moaning about the clocks going forwards grin

    Keith: Urg, I sympathise.

pete: I like that idea a lot!
