Spam Karma
I read about a clever anti-spam plugin on the WordPress Development Blog. Spam Karma assesses comments on multiple dimensions to determine their ‘spaminess’. It also tries to prevent any false positives at the same time as minimising the effort required to moderate comments manually.
I’ve installed the plugin now, as I’ve periodically had problems with comment spam (though nothing like the level of spamming I got when I was using MovableType). It should be exactly like commenting before. However, if your comment gets flagged up as being ‘borderline spammy’ (perhaps because it has more than three URLs in it), you may be asked to enter a code into a text box that you’ll be presented with as an image. This is to check that you are a real human and not an evil spambot. As usual, let me know if you hit any problems.

I was going to get on my accessibility high-horse for a second and argue that that should say: "this is to check that you are a real human whose eyesight is not impaired", but I see from Spam Karma's site that it offers self-moderation via the captcha or with a confirmation email, which is a nice touch. It always bugs me to see sites which use visual captchas as a means of confirmation without providing an alternative for those who perhaps can't see the image for some reason.

And Now for Something Different, More Spam I thought for my Wordpress weblog, After Gutenberg, that I had disallowed comments by unchecking the discussion option to allow comments. First thing this morning I learned my assumption was wrong. My 10 Mb mailbox was maxed out, with the...

No Refuge I have wanted to encourage rather than discourage commentary; comment spam flooding effectively stops such "blogospheric" conversation.

David: I agree that captchas or similar are bad news from an accessibility point of view, which was why I was also impressed that alternatives are offered. It seems a very comprehensive package, with some clever features. However, until I get some spam (real stuff, not these feeble imitations we are producing!), I won't know how well it works. For perhaps the first time in my life, I'm almost hoping that I might get some comment spam to test it!
The only minor niggle I've come across so far is that it turns off the option to receive an email when you get a (genuine comment). It's mentioned as a fixed bug for the latest version, though it still seems to be affecting me. No matter.
