Spam comments

p. I’ve been somewhat plagued by a deluge of spam comments on the site recently, so I was very interested in “this hack(Mentalized)”:http://www.mentalized.net/journal/2003/09/09/movabletypeeasiereditremovalofnewcomments/ to delete a spam comment directly from the email notification. I agree with “Erik(NSLog())”:http://nslog.com/archives/2003/10/09/easycommentdeletion.php though—a direct link to also rebuild the site and add the offending IP to the banned list would be just perfect.

p. Does anyone have any clever strategies for dealing with this kind of thing? I check my email fairly frequently, but I find it irritating to have to immediately wade through several pages of options to get rid of some objectionable comment so that I’m not inadvertently promoting a p0rn site. On the other hand, I really don’t want to turn commenting off, because I think that the comments are the best part of writing my blog. Sure, I get the occasional troll visiting along with the spammers, but the majority of comments are funny, informative, interesting or thought-provoking. Or in exceptional cases, all of the above. All I want is a painless way to get rid of the 2% of abusive comments.

that's the problem: spam begets spam -- sometimes they just put some seemingly innocuous text in the comment, so that other spammers have an exact phrase to search for when looking for new targets. [http://www.rayners.org/2003/10/01/belligerentcommentspam.php]

i'm just thankful there are some smart people out there who can devise ways of preventing the spam, and then share their methods with everyone else.

keep an eye on jay allen's weblog [http://www.jayallen.org/journey/ ], he's about to release a new plugin called 'mt-blacklist' which looks like it will be the be-all-and-end-all of spam comment blockingdeletion, with no hacking required [making upgrades of mt a whole lot simpler].

thankfully i've not ever received any spam comments, i think down to the fact i've kept google at bay, but i'll be installing this plugin the moment i get my very first one.----- Thanks for the heads-up, dvd -- that looks like it would be a really comprehensive solution, and since it's supposed to be released on Monday, I think I'll hold off with the hacking.

I didn't get any spam for ages, but then the floodgates opened and I get quite a number. Though the irritation they cause is out of all proportion to the quantity.

Personally I think the best cure is the headshot, it is efficient and fast. Since one of my addresses receive only spam mails I feel really mad about the spammerz. Posting unwanted ads is just like painting on the neighbour's wall...
