Release

I'm sure that regular readers will have noticed that I've been worried and depressed about my work situation. I've tried not to rant about it too much, but if you aren't in a good state of mind it does show in your writing. So I'm really happy to announce that—after months of rejections, and lying to myself about what I really wanted to be doing in an attempt to convince myself that the situation wasn't as soul-destroying as it seemed—I've just been offered a great job in academia. I don't want to give too many details right now, but it's right up my street, and is a permanent job (w00t!) with great potential. It also means that we'll be moving from Oxford. On the downside, I'll miss the beauty of the city, but the trade-off is that we will be able to afford to live somewhere decent: you can't eat the scenery, after all.

The immense, Atlas-like burden I have been dragging around for months lifted from my shoulders the minute I got the news, and left me feeling light and dizzy. Mr. Bsag and I went out for an impromptu celebration (we plan to have many celebrations now that we have a legitimate excuse), and on the way back on the bus, I picked some music on the iPod to fit my mood. I can heartily recommend 'It's the Sun' from The Beginning Stages Of... by the Polyphonic Spree if you are feeling jubilant:

SUN

Hope has come, you are safe

And it makes me cry

Because I'm on my way

On my way

On my way

Hey, it's the sun and it makes me shine

Right on cue, the evening sun came slanting through the trees, turning everything a blazing gold, and I don't mind admitting I had a bit of a tear in my eye.

    Congratulations!

and as a happy exile, I would like to say just how much I enjoy your "ramblings".

Hopefully you will be able to keep them up..

    Best regards from Norway

Well done and congrats. Actually, being an inattentive reader, i had not really noticed your uncomfortableness (which might be a good or bad thing, depending on how much you wished to communicate).

Best wishes to you and Monsieur Bsag for a rosy future - and do keep up the blogging and other fine things here.

    Regards Jolyon

Well done, congratulations, and best wishes! I know the feeling of that burden, and more than a bit of what it feels like to get it off of your shoulders. Better still that you've found something that suits you, and not just something that'll pay the bills.

    Go get 'em!

Congratulations! Most excellent. A happy and exciting work life always leads to a more fulfilling life in general, so best wishes to you and Mr. Bsag.

Like everybody else let me add my congratulations, and best wishes for the future. It's good to know that you will be doing something that suits you, rather than just earning a wage.

Keith----- Wow, that's really excellent news! Big, big congratulations! grin Can't wait to start guessing which part of the country you'll be moving to, based on any little clues you might leave behind...

Thanks all! I certainly plan to keep on blogging, but as I'm going to be pretty busy with the move and starting the new job in the next few months, posts might become a little more sporadic.

David (TEFL Smiler): I don't think guessing will be much of a challenge wink I'm also not being deliberately mysterious—I just didn't want the link between the appointment and the institution to be too obvious. I'm still trying to maintain some semblance of anonymity...

Many congratulations. A permanent job offer is a great thing in these moving times!

My old tutor from Oxford was offered a job at QM College in London last year. He took it - but he's still living in Oxford and suffering a two hour door-to-door commute. I myself have too left Oxford recently, I miss the place less than I thought I would...

Anyway good luck for the big move!

Brilliant! What excellent news! I know I should be reasonable and see all sides of the story, but....

Those Oxford twats will regret not hanging on to you. Nyaaah to them!

Oh good, really pleased to hear it, BSAG. Many congrats, and I hope it all works well.

My guess is that your new abode will be a place beginning with a C. But I'm probably wrong. Grin

Hmm, thought I'd left my congrats earlier, but they don't seem to have gone through.

Nevermind! Congratulations on the new job and home town. With your keen eye I'm sure you'll find plenty of beauty to write about.

[That Polyphonic Spree song is great! Very Mercury Rev. smile]

Ollie: I'm certainly not going to be commuting—particularly as the place I'm going to is much cheaper to live in than Oxford.

ThoughtBadger: Yes, I did have a very nice moment along those lines in my head when it was announced.

Lyle: Wrong! You're some way out geographically, but close alphabetically [smiles enigmatically].

Pete: I think I might manage to muse somewhere else wink And I can always come back for a visiting ponder.

David: Great isn't it? Have you heard the whole album?

    by bsag @ 17/05/2004 7:05 pm • Permalink

Re #18: No, not heard the whole album. I just ahem acquired that song because you mentioned it here; I'll see if I can "borrow" the rest sometime. smile
