We had the assessment for our First Aid at Work course today, and I passed! So I'm now Licensed To Bandage. I even get to carry a little green card in my wallet to certify that I'm a First Aider. Nothing in the course is particularly hard if you know a little bit about the basic plumbing and wiring of the human body and apply common sense, but it is good to feel confident about the correct way to prioritise treatment and the techniques you need to help someone. I think it's fair to say that in a real emergency, a certain amount of adrenalin and panic would set in, so having a memorised and drummed-in checklist of things to, well, check would be a good anchor to hang on to.
CPR is also an excellent skill to have. I think that everyone should really learn how to do it, because of the vital difference you could make in an emergency situation. Imagine how you'd feel if someone collapsed in front of you and stopped breathing, and you just stood there not knowing what to do? Still, I hope I never have to deal with anything that serious.

Jonathan Briggs: So far, he's avoided getting his arm put in a sling or put in the recovery position, but who knows---we might get really bored over Christmas.
Dave'ola: There was some mention of that difference during the course. Apparently, several people have tried to sue St. John Ambulance people, but such actions have never been successful, thankfully.

I was thinking more of the KOL! I promise not to disturb you at 7PM Christmas Day.......

Congratulations - you can now spend the holiday practicing on Mr. Bsag!----- The unfortunate thing about this in the US is that, depsite the Good Samaritan law, you're more likely to get sued or in a legal dispute if you -- as a bystander -- attempt CPR on someone else (the issue at stake is negligence). The idealist in me would love to maintain my CPR license, however the practical side of me knows that it's potentially a pandora's box that, unfortunately in this sue-happy country, is not something I want to open up. Even if the law is on my side, it costs money and time out of your life to answer any suit brought against you, even if you are in the right and the law is behind you. It's quite sad, really...
