Philosophical graffiti

imageA rather literate graffti artist has been making his or her presence felt around Oxford recently. In case you can't read it, this says, "Sois réaliste demande l'impossible". I get the gist, but if any Fracophones have a decent translation, let me know. It's written in chalk, not paint, so the person responsible has some respect for the buildings.

I ran across this slogan a couple of years ago and liked it. But I was unable to trace its source. I’d be really interested to learn where it comes from.----- Be realistic, ask the impossible......

Robert W: Hmm, curiouser and curiouser... rick: That's more or less what I thought.

It’s a variation on an old Situationist poster from May ‘68 in Paris: “Be realistic, ask for the impossible”. (Note, “ask for”, not “demand”; a well-known faux-ami.) The original was in the plural: “Soyez réalistes, demandez l’impossible”. There were dozens of those, emerging from the striking Ecole des Beaux Arts in St Germain; some wittier than others… -----
