Panther is looking promising

Filed under: Technology, — bsag @ 05:08 PM

There’s an interesting article by John Manzione on his experiences of running the developer release of Panther. He likes it so much he keeps reinstalling it, despite the inevitable stability problems and bugs. I’m certainly looking forward to the final version. I think that I’m mostly waiting for that first sweet moment when I casually demonstrate Exposé to a Windows user.

bsag - of possible interest, in view of your photographic leaning - www.aquapac.net.

I have no connection with the firm (came across them looking for a slr housing rated to 30m depth)and they sent me an interesting catalogue.----- Oh, the sheer joy of watching the windows smoothly move out of one another's way so you can select the one you want to work on! As you can imagine, that joy is magnified a thousandfold when a Windows user is watching.

It's even more beautiful on a multiple-monitor system. The windows cluttering the non-main screen will gently glide onto the main screen to arrange themselves, then glide smoothly back.

I've taken to keeping my desktop terribly cluttered with windows lately. At first, it was just so that I had an opportunity to use Expose if a Windows user happened to be standing behind me. They gasp in awe. It's like kids in a Teletubbies show -- "Again! Again!" They're amazed that it looks so smooth, that it's so quick, and they immediately see how it makes life easier when you're doing lots of stuff at once.

After a time, though, it quickly got to the point where I can no longer work effeciently unless I have Expose. That, and the improvements in Mail.app have seriously made using my laptop easier. I've reinstalled Panther four times because of (relatively minor) stability issues. I'll never go back to Jaguar again.

Heh, sounds great. I rely on VirtualDesktop (http://www.codetek.com/php/virtual.php ) at the moment, so it will be interesting to see which I prefer when I get Panther. Provided that the two play nicely together, I can see that Expose might even be useful with VirtualDesktop, as I still often end up with multiple windows on one desktop.

    Mmm. Smooth.

That effect with multiple monitors just sounds too cool!

I've tried VirtualDesktop every so often but was never quite happy with it. I somehow think it has to do with my box (it always felt slow and clunky, and I'm on a G3). Then again, I'm used to nice and fast virtual desktops on Solaris and Linux.

I'll give VirtualDesktop a shot and see how well it works with Expose.

Expose is much the same type of thing, but still different. I always used virtual desktops to organize my work: one desktop for programming work, another for tools, a third for various login terminals, a fourth for a web browser, etc. With Expose, you don't have that organization, just a method for quickly searching through the clutter.

I'll let you know how well they play together.
