Oxford Schmap
A week or so ago, I had a email via flickr from Schmap Guides to tell me that my shortlisted photograph (of the inside of the Pitt Rivers Museum in Oxford) had been selected for the Oxford Guide. Yay! The Schmap Guides are apparently free, downloadable guides with maps, photographs, reviews and so on for places in the UK and beyond. I say ‘apparently’ because at the moment the viewer is Windows only, so I can’t take a look. Anyway, if you have a Windows PC you can download the Oxford guide here if you’re interested. If you do, can you send me a screenshot of the page with my photograph on?

I suppose that as it is a free guide they don't pay you for it, but make sure you only allow them copyright for single use only, or it will be appearing all over the world!

Tried my best to do the screenshot thing for you, but that's not really how their viewer works. It's a kind of three pane thing, with a navigator to the left and the main content in the middle on a map. On the right, when the Uni Museum is selected on the map, there is a little more info and there are thumbnails of pics - including yours - which cycle as thumbnails. Clicking on your pic takes one to Flickr to view it full size. The idea of anything being on a particular page is therefore irrelevant.
Sorry...

I can't help wondering why they bother with a format that requires a reader rather than using a PDF or a folder full of HTML.

Jonathan Briggs: The original on flickr was under a Creative Commons Non-Commercial license, so they are allowed to use it freely (because they don't charge for the maps), provided they attribute the photo to me. It's actually quite an interesting use of Creative Commons, because they trawl flickr looking for images for their guides.
jim w: Thanks for trying, anyway.
Joe Block: Yes, I'm not sure quite why that's necessary. It would be a lot more accessible as a PDF with links or some HTML files. You could pretty the latter up with Flash, since most browsers can handle that.

I've emailed the screen shot. Little piggy of an app, hard to use. Nice shot!

Jannine: Thanks! I got the screenshot. Sorry to hear that it's hard to use the app - as per my previous comment, I don't know why they don't make it PDF/Flash or HTML format.
