Opera Mini 3

Filed under: Technology, Software, — bsag @ 01:01 PM

Opera Mini 3.0 has just been released, and has some really nice features. I’ve used it before on my mobile phone, but it now allows you to subscribe to RSS feeds as well, which is a nice addition. It’s fast, displays pages in a nice, clean way, and now collapses navigation links so that you don’t have to scroll past pages of navigation to get to the content. Prompted by the nice experience of reading RSS feeds on a mobile, I got around to setting up NewsGator to publish mobile feeds. It’s very easy: NewsGator allows you to have a number of different ‘Locations’ which are really just different methods for publishing feeds. I already use one to publish the blog links in the sidebar here, and there’s one already set up (though not activated) for mobile use. You just select a PIN number, and it provides a URL for you to visit from a mobile browser (which avoids the annoyance of having to enter a username and password in a mobile browser).

It works really well, and if you mark feeds as read on your phone, that state gets synched to NewsGator and NetNewsWire. I got so engrossed with reading my feeds on the train last Thursday — in particular Jason Kottke’s fascinating piece about super-cooled beer (mmmm… super-cooled beer…) — that I nearly missed my stop. Luckily, the woman in the inside seat asked me if I could move so she could get out, and I realised I needed to get out too. Other than the danger of missing your stop, reading feeds on your phone is a great way to pass a few minutes on public transport.

I shall ignore the fascinating geekery (Just when do you relax? Or is delving into the innards of sofware and its ilk your relaxation?) I shall go straight to the beer.....

"The beer is below the freezing temperature, but there is not enough contamination for the ice to form. The bubbles of carbon dioxide released when the bottle is hit act as nuclei for ice crystal growth in the supercooled beer. Same thing happens in reverse when water is microwaved in a smooth container but won't boil until hit."

This same contamination makes Champagne fizz, it's the impurities on the surface of the glass.

The microwaved water is something I inadvertently, accidentally, discovered: I reheated my wife's coffee in the microwave and went to stir it - the kitchen worktop was instantly covered in brown foam - scared the bejasas out of me!

An aside, Firefox's inbuilt spelling checker recognised bejasas the first time I used it, but not the second, it also failed to recognise the word "kerb", so I am having to teach it English English, which it at least allows me to do, which is more than can be said for "Pages" which doesn't allow one to add English English spellings to its dictionary of addmissible spellings, even though, when queried, it admits that "Chequered" is the British spelling of "Checkered" which of course it isn't; Checkered is the American spelling of the English word Chequered!

So to prove my point, the dumb spelling checker allows me to spell admissible as addmissible, a mistake I noticed the moment I hit the submit button; Isn't that always the way!

Now I have found an alternative spelling of bejasas, to wit, bejasus, and Firefox doesn't like either of them! So there you go.......

And the anti-spam generator seems to have an obsession with cunnilingus, as it is the third time it has incorporated the number 69!

Jonathan Briggs: Yes, as you've probably guessed by now, "delving into the innards of sofware and its ilk" is one of the ways I relax, along with attacking bamboo with shears, going for walks, reading and listening to music.

Thanks for the tip about Opera Mini and NewsGator. I have a NewsGator-subscription thorugh NetNewsWire on my Mac, and being able to read synchronised feeds on my mobile is indeed grand!

ObBeer: A sudden decrease in pressure is what causes miniature clouds to form in the neck of a beer bottle when opened.
