Oooh, they REALLY don’t want me

Filed under: Rants, — bsag @ 06:10 PM

p. As I’m now technically semi-employed after the end of my contract (it’s a long story), I’ve been frantically applying for jobs. This morning, a University which shall remain nameless rejected my application. Just to rub salt into the wound—followed by a nice dash of vinegar—they sent me two identical rejection letters. Thanks a lot! I think I’ve got the message now.

Ones for your most current application. The other is for any future applications. Just in case you thought you'd try again. smile Sorry I couldn't resist. I've seen lots of Human Resource departments do the same things, I trust they haven't even read your resume. Sorry to here of the mad job scramble. Here's hoping you find something that's both fun and challenging.----- Sorry to hear about that bsag, so best wishes for finding something that you want to do, or at least get paid vast amounts of money for doing something you don't really want to do.

However, I would like to hear the long story that defines you as semi-employed instead of, umm, something else.

    Bon chance

Thanks for the support, folks. I've got a couple of other things to try, so we'll see what happens.

dave m: It's quite a boring story really, but the job is intended to be an adjunct to a full time academic position. So it doesn't pay too well, but oddly seems to take up lots of time (at least in the beginning). If I can get a full time position to go with it, I'll be fine, but otherwise it's not enough to live on.

That's evil; at least you get rejection letters. In two years of applying for at least one job a week, I've had a total of one - hey! count it - one rejection letter. I prefered them not telling, to be honest; at least then you don't have physical evidence of your failiure cries

Never mind, I had no job for six monts. Since it happened summertime I did not care. At first everyone was out of office and after all I was able to enjoy the life a bit. Then I got a job, an easy one, good payment. I worked there for three days then I quitted for a other one - much more difficult job, much more interesting same payment. They called me on tuesday and employed me on friday. During this week an other company called me saying they finally decided to employ me. I told them I already have a job. In my mind I also told my *** and ***** and ******* then ****** *** because they were asked a lots of stupid questions made me feel just like an apple in the marketplace. They dropped me saying "we'll call you". They did not called me for a month... whatewer. Getting job is a quite funny game I think ;>

sarah: I've had that too, but it really irritates me when they don't even have the courtesy to write and tell you. It's almost as if they're saying, "Hey, we don't even want to waste 22p on a stamp for you!"

Fisher: I wish I could be so philosophical wink If I had enough to pay the rent, I wouldn't mind.

I'm sorry to hear that you were turned down. I'm about to submit my own applications to Canadian universities and so I feel your disappointment and frustration keenly.

From what I can tell, academic hiring is very subjective. By talking to several people I've learned that in order to be successful the candidate must win over at least one strong advocate in the department. Whether or not your particular research proposals resonate with your potential colleagues is truly a hit and miss affair. I've disclosed my ideas to a few people, and have found that a proposal that makes one person really excited leaves another completely nonplussed.

I've just started to keep a diary of my search to find an academic position that I hope will serve as a source of info for others in our position, and a starting point for further discussion. (http://www.nathanjones.com/writing/struggle.html )

Keep up the search, and don't be discouraged!
