Nothing says “I love you” like hexadecimal
I love this geeky love poem by KillerHamster which appeared in a comment on Slashdot:
Roses are #FF0000
Violets are #0000FF
chown -R you ~/base
I think it’s a tribute to my geekoid status that I a) understand it, and b) would be really touched if someone sent me a poem like this.

Well, by all means:
Roses are #FF0000 Violets are #0000FF chown -R you ~/base
Very good.

Ok, I have to ask. I get the roses are red, violets are blue bit, but then I got lost. I read this as something like "change owner recursively you home folder base" - which doesn't really have much of a romantic feel to me, so suspect I may have mistranslated somewhere

Yes, I can't say the latter bit made much romantic sense to me (It doesn't help that my only experience of Unix is having a Linux virtual host...).
However, if you look at the BoingBoing page, it explains it.
lol :D

But of course I know that meme
I saw base and guessed that it was something like that, but I had to read the BoingBoing page to get it. Thanks for posting it

p. Matt Gemmell: Well, my comment was supposed to be an observation rather than an invitation, but--thanks!
p. djn1 and Matthew: "All my base are belong to you"
p. It's also a reference to a kind of gaming/internet meme that went global a couple of years ago. The background is here, if you're interested.

Ok, that makes some sense then, but what's the significance of 'base'? Why not ~/love or ~/heart?

Because of the meme mentioned (a meme being, effectively, a craze that goes round the internet in this context) - the badly-translated video game parody "All Your Base" which is familiar to a lot of internet users. If that made sense.

Seeing as I did not understand this (past colors; which I could only guess atâ¦) I guess I am, formally, no longer a geek. sigh

ah, but got it from the articles (finally. .boink) and reading the "about," bsag, made me laugh. a few years ago i was the "go-to" person for computer problems, and thought myself quite the cyber-literate when i took vc (aka "virtual classroom," for the uninitiated) three years ago.
yeah. now, three years later, i had some trouble locating the power button on one of our iMacs...I am, therefore, in awe of your computer/technical gizmo jargon. :0)
