My iPulse

p. iPulseI had a request in the comments of "this entry":http://www.rousette.org.uk/mt-static/blog/archives/000505.html to post an image of my "iPulse":http://iconfactory.com/ip_home.asp set up. So for all you crazy iPulse fans, here is my configuration. I should say, here is my most recent configuration; iPulse comes with a lot of different 'jackets' as backgrounds, and the colours and transparency levels of gauges are all totally customisable, encouraging entirely pathological levels of tinkering. I've experimented with a lot of different looks, but this is my favourite at the moment. The red blob in the centre is the CPU utilisation (around about 30%), memory usage is the grey arc at the top, disc usage at the bottom (there's some disc reading going on, and some network activity--the red and green circles on the outer ring). The battery level is shown by the row of red dots, airport level by the ring of blue dots, moon phase at 12 o'clock, and finally the time (just before 9 o'clock) is shown by the black circles. Cool, eh?

p. I don't use the 24 hour analogue clock, though I'd like to. It just takes me too long to figure out what time it is, which seems to somewhat defeat the whole purpose of a timepiece. I also don't use the load history gauge because it adds a bit too much clutter for my liking. It's amazing how quickly you got used to the display. I see it out of the corner of my eye, and think, "hmm, frantic disc activity and memory paging--Word must be launching."

Very cool. I have to say that mine is rather dull in comparison. I have a two colour theme for my second desktop (cream: 255, 255, 204 and grey/blue: 91, 129, 177) and have faded all the iPulse indicators to one or the other of those colours. I did experiment with the various jackets (which do look very good) but I found it all too distracting after a while.

By the way - to hark back to the original Hunter's Moon post - I came across an html moon phase generator you might be interested in at:

http://www.calculatorcat.com/moonphases/moonphases.phtml?calculator=10342----- djn1: I did have an even brighter one, but it was a bit distracting. Your desktop sounds a lot more tasteful than mine. I have a Digital Blasphemy ( http://digitalblasphemy.com/ ) image called 'Haiku' of an autumn leaf floating in a tranquil pond).

Thanks for the moon phase generator link -- you might have noticed that I now have a moon phase display at the bottom of my sidebar. You never know, it might actually be useful for someone!

I hadn't noticed the moon-phase generator - it looks good. As for my desktop, I'm not sure that it's more tasteful, but it's probably less intrusive. Because I have two monitors the second of the two frequently has nothing on it, hence the muted, non-distracting look. Anything too fussy just distracts from whatever I'm trying to do at the time.

Thanks for the digitalblasphemy link, I hadn't come across it (I tend to get most of my desktops from www.resexcellence.com ).

    grin

You've already got the makings of a linear analogue 24 hour clock with your blogtimes display. Just need a cursor...

I like the moonphase panel on your main page!

pete: I hadn't thought of that. Hmm, that might be a project for when I get some time... Thanks should go to djn1 for the link to the moon site. I rather like having it there.

If you struggle with a 24hr analog clock you could always try a binary one instead. There's an html/javascript one here:

    http://www.jumpstation.co.uk/binaryclock/

It might complement your new moon-phase generator wink

Actually, I found a better binary clock at:

    http://www.glassgiant.com/misc_binaryclock.php

And while I managed to narrowly avoid coding a moon-phase generator into my site (I was tempted) I couldn't resist the binary clock. It's now sitting towards the bottom of my sidebar on the main page wink
