Mad World - Michael Andrews and Gary Jules

This is just a quick entry for my CD of the week, as I’ve recently mentioned this particular piece of music before. It’s also unusual for me to cover singles, but this is a very honourable exception. When Caitlin mentioned that this single might just beat the legions of shoddy cover versions and excruciating pop pap to the Christmas number one slot, I immediately went out and searched for the single. After a bit of hunting, I found a copy, so I’d like to think that I’ve played some tiny part in its success. I’ve just heard that it has made it—’Mad World’ is number one for Christmas.

It is actually a great Christmas song, if only in the sense that it makes a perfect, downbeat accompaniment to fighting your way through Christmas shoppers. Try it—load the song up on your personal stereo of choice, slap the headphones on, and walk down the busiest shopping street in your home town or city.

All around me are familiar faces Worn out places, worn out faces Bright and early for their daily races Going nowhere, going nowhere And their tears are filling up their glasses No expression, no expression Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow No tommorow, no tommorow

It just works, doesn’t it?

i really like your song it's the best keep going and your be at no1 in no time i was just wondering why don'y you make a site up so people can find the words of the song and the notes on instruments so then they can play it to. you are going to be so famous i know you will.

once again your song is the best we did a test thing at school and you got 2,000 votes out of 2,500 and i think you should be very proud of that----- hi! Im from germany and i saw the film danny darko half a year ago and i like it very much. but the most impressing thing was the song mad world. when the song was played at the end of the film we all sat there and nobody said a word. we were so seized and it goes so deep! so on the one hand i think it is nice that the sond has many success but on the outher hand i`m frightened that also in germany the song is played all the time by the radio stations and that the song looses his attraction!

that is my oppinion but best of luck for you!

PS: Sorry but my english isn`t the best

A few commenters here seem to be under the impression either that I covered the song, or that Gary Jules or Michael Andrews might visit here and see the comments. I wish that the first was true, but unfortunately I have less musical talent than a cockroach. The second is very unlikely. I suggest that you visit Gary Jules' site ( http://garyjules.com/index2.html ) and leave him a message there.

I didn't like this song at first but now i think its excellent. My sis said that some Year 11's used this song in their play about disabled people. This song is like number 2 in my top 5 songs so out of 10 i'd give 10

Do you imagine a better sung song than 'It's a mad, mad world' by Gary Jules, in his own inimitable style? I do: The Living Years! Make it your next single Gary, PLEASE!!!! Patrick, age 53, Nottingham

i need to say: wow. this song expresses what i actually think. but one difference: if you are young you (hopefully) never wish 'no tomorrow' but you want to do something against this madness. i wish for myself ever to be content with myself, nobody will ever be free, but i'm lucky if we would try. happy birthday
