iPod surprises

Filed under: Life As We Know It, — bsag @ 09:02 PM

One of the joys of listening to an iPod on random play is that you occasionally hear a track so surprising that you would be prepared to swear in a court of law had absolutely nothing to do with you, because you have no recollection of putting it on the iPod, and you can’t think why you would have done anyway.

As an example, I was happily listening to my iPod this morning, when the intro to a new track began:

[iPod] DUM-da-dum, DUM-da-dum…

[Me, because I already recognise the song] What the…?

[iPod] DUM-da-dum, DUM-da-dum, It’s not unusual to be loved by anyone, DA-da-da-da-da, It’s not unusual to have fun with anyone…

[Me] Tom Jones! I swear that I’m not responsible for putting that on, officer–someone must have sneakily synchronised it over while I wasn’t looking.

I’ll tell you what though–nothing gets the hips a-swinging first thing in the morning like a good dose of the ‘Jones the Voice’. It did me the world of good. You see, my iPod knows me better than I do. There’s lovely.

apparently, it's not unusual for this to happen... raspberry----- My brother gave me a CD called "Help", where several bands did cover versions for a charity looking after child victims of the Bosnia conflict. I've played it dozens of times, but there always seems to be a previously-unheard track, as if someone's burned an extra song since the last listen? Or I'm ga ga.

I am like SO wanting an iPod. Posts like this just make me want one even more. But the MiniPods don't tempt me.

BSAG, Is the iPod REALLY that good?

Two things: 1. I love it when that happens to me on my iPod. I mean, with that many songs on the thing I'm bound to forget 1 or 2 (or 10 or 20). What's really suprising is when the songs that you ahem "borrowed" when you were burning a CD for someone else pop up on there. I'm halfway tempted to write an AppleScript to go out and grab a random song from the iTunes music store when I plug in my iPod. That could get expensive, though.

    1. A joke: A man walks into his doctor's office, and says, "Doctor, doctor! You've gotta help me! I keep singing 'Green Green Grass of Home'!"

The doctor says, "Sounds like you have Tom Jones' Syndrome."

"Is it common?", the man asks.

    "It's not unusual..."

BA-DUM BUM! Thank you! Thank you!

    stacy: Groan… wink

Mr. D.: I think that this track must be off a similar compilation, but I can’t for the life of me think what. I certainly don’t own any Tom Jones albums.

jb: In a word, yes. The main thing is the huge amount of storage. You can keep so much music on it that there’s always something you feel like listening to, and you can get surprised by what comes up. The design is also elegantly simple, battery life is good (despite what the bad publicity says), and the sound quality is very good with decent headphones (bearing in mind the inherent limitations of MP3 or AAC).

bitweever: Your random song from ITMS sounds fun, but I couldn’t use it because you still can’t use the store from Europe. And that’s a great joke!
