I’ll give you a ring on my handy

This made me laugh like a drain this morning. You really have to wonder if the makers of Trivial Pursuit do any actual research at all. However, given the question about feverfew, it’s entirely possible that they think we’re still living in the 18th Century, and that ‘handy’ actually refers to semaphore without the flags.

It is however what Germans call a mobile! Caused great confusion a couple of years ago when I was in Germany for work. They all expected us to know what they were talking about! They all assumed it was what we called them and they'd picked it up as a loan word----- In France, the expression used for jogging is "footing", which does not make any sense to a native speaker of English, much to the astonishment of French people.

If you're feeling romantic, you could say: "I'll give you a ring on your handy?"

SteveC: Whaat! It's an international conspiracy! The plot thickens...

    Pascal Venier: Hehe. Footing.

Pete: He's good isn't he? I've been reading it for a while, and should put it on my bloglist when I remember.

    Mr. D.: Groan... grin

Well, compared to a couple of years back, this has improved considerably here in Germany. Almost everybody I work with knows that a mobile phone is not called "a handy" in English.

An English mate of mine gave up TP after the first question (in Swedish): " Who was the chairman of Volvo in the early 1970s?"... umm. Björn Borg? Olof Palme? Oh, and in Sweden Walkmans are known as Freestyles; a camp Anglicism that's almost as bad as using a "handy"!
