I have to admit it: I'm addicted to House. I'm a bit of a latecomer to the show, and initially thought that I'd hate it because I couldn't see Hugh Laurie (who I visualise as Bertie Wooster because of his role in the classic Jeeves and Wooster TV series) as a grizzled, misanthropic and---above all---American doctor. But he pulls it off wonderfully. In many ways, Gregory House is a kind of anti-Wooster, and if their characters were ever to meet, I suspect that it might bring about the destruction of the Universe.
I'm keen on ER, but often there's frustratingly little of the exciting diagnosis of mysterious diseases part, and a lot of dull 'relationship' stuff. However, in ER I can (at least some of the time) correctly diagnose the patient's problem before the doctors do, which is something I can never do with House. I've tried guessing Lupus erythematosus a few times, purely on the basis that it's obscure, has lots of interesting symptoms and cool name, but with no success so far.
I love the whole House/Holmes, Wilson/Watson thing, and House is paradoxically a very appealing character. He's so even-handedly horrible to everyone, regardless of age, race, religion or gender, that he somehow manages to be perversely charming. Mind you, if he was my doctor, I'd make sure I was never ill.

I've loved House since the first episode, but have missed more than half of both series due to other commitments and a broken video machine. It's the only medical drama I can watch and find interesting - it's brilliant.

House is great, Laurie excellent - but could you handle it if your medic was like that?
Interested in your comments re Lupus, my wife suffers from it, took them ages to find out!

I'm from the other side of the pond - Canada - and it came as quite a shock to me to that Hugh Laurie is not an American but rather a British actor with a huge body of work! It was strange to hear him speak with a British accent. Hugh Laurie makes Dr. House human and vulnerable- his only redeeming qualities.
Meeting of the two characters bringing about the end of the universe: Rolling on the floor laughing out loud !!!

it really is a fabulous show. Not sure where Bryan "usual suspects" Singer's influence comes in though.

Clair: I definitely think Hugh Laurie is the best part about it, though I also like Wilson and Cuddy.
Matthew: I think I'm going to have to get the earlier ones out from Lovefilm like Clair.
Julian: I know a little about Lupus because several years ago I had Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, and before I was eventually diagnosed, I was tested for just about every other conceivable disease which might have symptoms of constant and massive fatigue, immune system depression and aching joints, one of which was Lupus. I was pretty glad that that test turned out negative. I feel for your wife.
Jeannine: His accent sounds pretty authentic to me, and I've heard Americans say the same.
Jonathan Briggs: Now, now, that's a bit sarky. It's actually pretty difficult to do a convincing accent, and many people who are good actors don't have the knack. Hugh Laurie seems to.
chris: There's a few twists and turns, I suppose, but I agree, the influence isn't clear.

I too am a late comer to House, and it's amazing. Hugh really plays House perfectly, a man twisted by pain and hurt in his past but with a single goal of helping people...
The best one liner is when he pretends to be a British doctor and just uses his normal voice, quite a shock after seeing him in hours of House playing an American.

House was great again. Probably because we all wish we could shoot something and then stick in an MRI machine, just to see what would happen...

chris: Yes it was great - I can't wait for the second part. My favourite line was when House was drilling a hole in Foreman's skull and poking around in his brain in an inappropriately gleeful way:
Foreman: House, get out of my temporal lobe!
Funny and neurologist-geeky.

I've really got into House recently, and am now slowly 'lovefilming' my way through the first series.
I think it's great that even though there are all sorts of different characters, that aren't really any that you hate. They're not infaliable, and do make mistakes at times, but usually manage to put it right. And Hugh Laurie is just brilliant.
