Going towards Mevagissey
[The Great Escape, day one: written 11th August, 2005]
I love the sea. Some of my happiest moments have been spent beside it, on it, or in it. For me, there’s a special quality of relaxation that comes from sitting or walking by a shore, looking at the waves and breathing in that lovely seaweed smell. So today, as the train rounded a corner at Dawlish to hug the narrow strip of land between the ox blood red cliffs and the petrol blue sea, it was all I could do not to yell out “I can see the sea!” like an excited six year old.
It’s a pity, then, that I live in one of the points of Britain that’s furthest from the sea. I have to get my fix in short, intense bursts of exposure.

It's the ozone, apparently.----- it was all I could do not to yell out âI can see the sea!â like an excited six year old. My wife still tends to do that -- and she's rather older than you! Her excuse is that she was born and brought up in Bude, North Cornwall, so misses the sea rather more than me. And we tend to be in the car, not on a train. But I know what you mean.

Mr. D.: Perhaps, though standing by the photocopier doesn't seem to have the same effect
SteveC: Hehe. If you're in the car, it's not quite so embarrassing.

Don't worry...I shout that whenever I see the sea too...
(And mevagissey is a lovely place, if somewhat full of tourists)

The train ourney along the coastline via Dawlish and Teignmouth IS a lovely one, though. Got some magnificent photos of that area last time I was down there.

Don't worry, I still have the urge to shout it, and I live in Dawlish!
P.S. It's supposed to be the most expensively maintained section of railway in the world, and seeing the damage the winter storms do I can believe it...
