Feed(ing) frenzy

Following the transfer to ExpressionEngine to run this site, the hardest thing to get right has been the feeds. That's partly because they are inherently somewhat tricky, and also because caching in feed readers and browsers makes it very hard to debug.

Anyway, I think that I've got it sorted now. I've set up two ways to access the Wings Open Wide feeds, so that people subscribed to the old feeds should start to see content again (thanks to David of fuddland for the reminder that I'd broken it).

I've also set up a separate feed for the media section with my reviews in it which is here. For those of you who are feed junkies or just gluttons for punishment where my witterings are concerned, there's a bumper combo feed which I constructed using the excellent FeedDigest. This combines the feeds for my writing, my photographs, the links in the ma.gnolia list in the sidebar and the media reviews.

I no longer have a comments feed (though I could make one if anyone is interested), but when you comment with EE you can check a box to get it to email you when there's a follow-up. I think that's what most people used the comment feed for.

Great document trees......... Under your new format, to get good visual clarity in your links sidebar, I have to go up one text level in "View" compared to your previous layout. It is of course not helped by being light grey over white, which is graphically attractive, but the lack of contrast isn't good for we peripensioners ( a word for which I claim copyright, as it describes the limbo in which I live and have my being; old enough for a bus pass, but too young for my State pension).

Jonathan Briggs: Do you mean that the font size is too small in the sidebar? I can probably do something about that (it's difficult to judge what it will look like in all browsers). Is it all the text in the sidebar? I'll also darken the text up a bit to increase the contrast, but it should be dark grey on light grey, not white (not that that's any better, contrast-wise). "Peripensioners". Heh :-D

No - the font size on the whole web page is one step smaller than before. I don't think it's the latest Firefox update, as other pages don't seem to be different. If I "enlarge" your page, and then step back to a previous web page, the print is larger. It doesn't seem to happen in IE6 on my PC, I'll check on my Laptop later.

Nope, it's only happening on my Mac Mini running Firefox - being old and forgetful, I never thought to check my Apple using Safari or Opera (They're both there, but I don't use them), so, project for Friday then.

On the PC at work, no size problem, but downloading takes a while.....

One minor thing with your feeds - for some reason, I think since you switched to EE, some of the entries have the wrong date on them (I'm using NetNewsWire 2.1.1). This one is for instance dated November 30, 1999...

Jonathan Briggs: I would think that -- given the result of your testing -- it's probably either a difference in the way that the Mac version of Firefox interprets text sizing, or that the default text size is set differently in the browser. You could check the preferences for text sizing out, and compare them between browsers if you're interested. Anyway, I'll tinker with it a bit tomorrow and try to improve the legibility a bit. maki: I hope that I've fixed that now. There seemed to be a problem with the command for the post edit date, which gave some random (and rather old) date.

Your most popular feed in BlogLines (with 100+ subscribers) hasn't updated since the first of this month. I just switched to the RSS 2.0 feed, and it seems to be fine.

Milan: What's the URL of that feed? It should be updating OK, but caching seems to be a big problem when you change the feed.
