Exhibition

p. Mr. Bsag has an exhibition of his paintings at the Far From The Madding Crowd pub in Oxford, so we got up at an unreasonably early hour to go and hang them up. Several hours later, and with a great deal of "up a bit, no--down a bit" business, we finally got about 26 paintings hung and labelled.

p. It was great to see them all hanging in such a big space. At home, we can only see a couple hanging together, and can only view them from a couple of metres away, so it makes a huge difference to see them in a big group and from a greater distance. Anyway, if anyone happens to be in Oxford, do go and visit the Far From The Madding Crowd (down the saucily-named Friar's Entry, between the Odeon cinema and Borders). It's a nice pub, and you might like the paintings. If you see a ginger-haired, short-ish man in there, say the magic word and he might even buy you a pint.

  1. 1

The magic word presumably being something like - 'how much for one of your brilliant paintings'? smile

How long is it there for and what kind of painting?----- Is the Madding Crowd where the Gloucester Arms used to be? Or am I thinking of somewhere else entirely?

Pery once had an exhibition of her paintings in a restaurant, and when they came back home they smelt of chips. That's how those Rembrandts got their patina, I expect...

    Hope he sells a few!

dave m: Heh. That'll do nicely, sir... The exhibition runs until 19th November, and it's mostly landscapes and semi-abstracts inspired by landscapes. The paintings are watercolours, pen and wash and acrylic.

Lyle: It's near the Gloucester Arms, but it's a new building formed when Debenhams renovated their building and let out space to Sainsbury's, Borders etc. The Gloucester Arms is still there and still proudly serving greasy bikers and rockers.

Pete: grin I'm sure that they'll have a bit of nicotine staining. But we'll both be very happy if a few sell. Our flat is just too small to store a lot of art.

Ah cool, Bsag - I haven't seen Oxford since the Debenhams frontage got renovated and redone - I last remember seeing it clad in keffing great dollops of nasty "brick" red scaffolding.

Glad the Gloucester's still there - many's the time I fell out of there in no fit state to crawl home. And no, I'm neither greasy nor a biker...

I might be wrong here but when I used to live near Oxford as a schoolboy in the late sixties, unless I have got the wrong pub, (it was near the bus station) I believe the the Gloucester Arms was the gay pub in central Oxford. Or have I got the wrong pub?

The only gay pubs I know of in Oxford are (were, actually - haven't been in a few years) The City Tavern, and the Jolly Farmers. However, neither of those are overly close to the bus station. The Gloucester is on the corner of Gloucester Green (logically) which is the bus station in Oxford. So you could be right - I didn't get into the Gloucester 'til late 80s/early 90s.

I have never had the pleasure of the Madding Crowd pub, but I have recently been in the Gloucester Arms. The Gloucester wins hands down.

I work at the Gloucester and (out of curiosity) did a search on Google which led me here.

As far as I know, The Gloucester WAS a gay pub at one time! And not all us rockers are greasy! giggles

bsag, do you know Stan? He works at the Madding Crowd and is a Gloc regular!
