Dr. Who is coming back

This could be excellent news; a new series of Dr. Who is going to be filmed. Russell T Davies---who created 'Queer As Folk'---is going to write the new series, which could either mean that it's really great or really bad. He is at least a big fan himself, and I've heard encouraging things about going back to the original feel of the series: an older and more eccentric Doctor, and perhaps even a return to the good old cheap rubber monsters, and scenes obviously shot in quarries.

To herald this momentous news on the Today programme, they played a previous clip of John Humphrys interviewing a dalek. It's really a classic. Part of the exchange went like this (you can hear the full version here:

*Humphrys*: Good morning. *Dalek*: GOOD MORNING. I WAS PROMISED SUE MCGREGOR! [becoming more shrill and insistent] WHO ARE YOU? *Humphrys*: I'm John Humphrys. *Dalek*: NOT FOR LONG. EXTERMINATE!! *Humphrys*: I think many people think that...

Of course, Tom Baker is the one true Doctor... The classic theme music (written by the BBC Radiophonic Workshop in the days long before synthesisers were common) is also the best SciFi theme music ever.

Don't know if I'm looking forward to another series, but I'm really enjoying the Doctor's appearances on Dead Ringers (BBC7 reruns). I love the 'hoax' calls when he rings up, say, the National Rail Enquiries line and asks for train times. Surprisingly, when he announces himself as "The Doctor", the innocent on the other end doesn't immediately say "Oh, yes, you're that bloke from the telly", but asks him whether Gallifrey is near Romford.----- Last week's Dead Ringer's Tom Baker phonecall was a real classic. He phoned Rolf Harris who, without spoiling it, seemed to play along without really playing along...or something.

Apparently, stoned funnyman Alan Davies is the bookies' favourite to become the new doctor, a move I reckon would work wonders as, having seen him on Lord stephen Fry's QI, he is actually funny and can do clever, too.

pete: Yes, I love the Doctor's hoax calls too. The Rolf Harris one was great. I've heard various stories about the real Tom Baker which make it plausible that people who know him might believe these wacky calls are actually him. l forget who 'does' him, but it's a perfect characterisation of his voice.

Jann: I keep meaning to write about QI. I wasn't sure about it after the first one, but it is really funny. I thought it was just my imagination that Alan Davies was stoned in one episode, but he was certainly away with the fairies.
