Dorking

Filed under: Random Mumblings, — bsag @ 10:02 PM

In homage to Douglas Adams’ and John Lloyd’s excellent The Deeper Meaning of Liff:

dorking (verb trans.): the practice of expressing the curious and contradictory mixture of irritation, secret pride and frustration felt by a geek when a Google search for some vital piece of information leads to his/her own blog post on a superficially related topic. Tends to provoke thoughts similar to “if I already knew the answer, I wouldn’t be Googling for it, now would I?”

A completely unhelpful comment, but... snigger----- On a similar subject, why is it that I just had to look up a forum posting that I made about how to configure Opera Mail with PlusNet's IMAP access? Why didn't my brain use the space that it had reserved for remembering that I'd made the forum post, for storing the flippin' solution instead? wink

We came up with the term "Dork Bread" about 20 years ago. I can't recall the definition now, but it's a phrase I've kept in the back of my mind since then. "Dorking" brought it back to the surface. wink

Disgusted of Dorking wishes to respond. Since my move from Tunbridge Wells, I have been plagued with spam from "Net Narcissist" who trawl through the Web trying to find mentions of themselves. It is thought that this may be an entry requirement for the next series of Big Brother.......

    Clair: grin

David: Hehe, I know the feeling. It's just one of the many mysterious things about the brain...

DiskDamn: Is that like Dwarf Bread (if you've read any Terry Pratchett)?

Jonathan Briggs: Have I missed something? I'm hope that I'm not any kind of narcissist, net or otherwise (unless you count just writing a blog, which some do). I don't ego surf and I don't knowingly send spam. I certainly never want to even watch Big Brother, let alone appear on it. On another matter, your comments seem to keep being swallowed by Spam Karma for some reason, but I keep fishing them out again. Sorry about that - I'm not sure what the problem is.

    Bsssssssag,

It wasn't directed at you, it was a follow on from your comment about those that google their own names; the comment was then confused by the fact that the prior posting suddenly got a blank page with a "You do not have permission etc", so I started again, then it got really odd as it seemed to know what I was doing, so I got out before it sucked me in to a whirlpool of ......

Jonathan Briggs: Aaah, now it's clear. Sort of grin. Sorry for being such a paranoid nelly. It's overwork, y'know. I think I'll just go and have a little lie down...
