Commuting music

Filed under: Music, — bsag @ 04:09 PM

If you happen to have a fairly long and dull walk to the train station in the morning, can I recommend a track that will put a groove in your step? ‘Zig Zag Wanderer’ by Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band (from the album Safe As Milk) is just such a track. The funky bass riff in the middle will make you play air-bass and will undoubtedly get you some funny looks from other Beefheartless commuters, but it’s worth it for the smile that will be on your face for a few hours.

And if you're driving along on a beautiful summer day, the best song you can have on is "Jessica" by The Allman Brothers Band. Not much can beat the feeling of just cruising around with no particular place to go and just enjoy some of the longest and winding guitar music you can find. smile----- and to ensure you accidentally step under a bus: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/23902

indieb0i: I'll have to check that one out.

Saltation: Hehe grin Unfortunately, my iPod doesn't have video, and I'm not wandering down the street with my PowerBook open... Looks interesting, though.

Captain Beefheart and His Magic Band?

That name scares me enough that now I have to check it out!

Lately, for commuting music, I've been listening to Mogwai. Very relaxing and calming, but with enough of a rhythm that I don't fall asleep at the wheel. Especially the "Come On Die Young" and "Rock Action" albums.

Nate: Captain Beefheart is great, but extraordinarily varied in style. Some albums ('Trout Mask Replica', for example) I find unlistenable. So choose your album wisely! I think 'Safe As Milk' is a pretty good introduction, and includes the classic track, 'Electricity'.

Captain Beefheart (Don Van Vliet) is one of the very greatest artists from the mid sixties. Genius is an overused word, but it probably applies to him. He always appeared to be more than slightly dangerous, and just inhabiting the fringes of sanity. I remember seeing him in a hilarious interview with some rather over earnest BBC journalist, who gave the impression of being trapped in a cage with a friendly but unpredictable grizzly bear. It is tragic that he is so neglected now. I agree that "Trout Mask Replica" is very intimidating on first hearing, but if you stop trying to make sense of it, and just try to slip into its world, from chaos it will suddenly come into focus, and become enjoyable. He is a pretty fine painter too, which is all he has done since those times. To find out more The Captain Beefheart Radar Station is a good site. There is also a link there to a broadband streaming radio station playing suitably bizarre music.

ThoughtBadger: Perhaps I'll give Trout Mask Replica another go. I saw a documentary about him, which featured Ry Cooder talking about the recording of TMR. He said that it nearly drove him nuts.
