Comments feed - Take 2

Filed under: Technology, — bsag @ 03:01 PM

I had another go at a comments feed which would be a complete one—i.e. it would show the full post and also each of the comments, with one channel for the whole blog, and each entry and its associated comments forming an item within that feed. I struggled to produce something myself, but couldn’t produce something that actually worked.

After a Google session, I found this lovely template on etc, tried it out, and it works just as I had hoped it would.

So, I’ve provided the new feed here, or you can click on the ‘RSS Post+Com’ button in the sidebar. You don’t need to subscribe to both the standard RSS 0.91 feed and this new one—just choose one depending on whether you want comments or not. I’ve left the individual entry feeds too (at least for now)—never let it be said that I don’t offer choice!

I'm impressed with this solution and may consider swapping mine over to a dual feed at some point. I suppose my only (niggling) doubt about this solution is that there's more to scroll through in your news reader before you get to the added comment (i.e. each time an entry is updated with a new comment readers will need to scroll past the entry to get to the bit they want to read). But that's hardly a major issue.----- blink

Mr. D.: Hehe. Sorry. To put it in English, you can - if you wish - read my blog in an RSS News Reader application (e.g. NetNewsWire - http://ranchero.com/netnewswire/ ). If you haven't encountered these before, they use an RSS feed (just a file, really) to display the latest changes to the page you're interested in. The display is more or less just plain text (with a few images), but the advantage is that it checks automatically at intervals, so you are informed when there is new content, without having to check the page. This may be of no interest to you whatsoever. Anyway, I now provide an RSS feed of the entries only, or the entry plus any comments, so that you can also tell when someone adds a comment to an entry.

I'm grateful for the time you've given to the 'English' explanation, bsag, but guess I'll just have to change my blog's name to bhab(loke)
