Catless
My parents came up this weekend to pick up our feline house guest, and the house suddenly seems empty and a bit lifeless without that little furry monster. I miss her jumping in my lap and head-butting my book as a not-so-subtle cue that I should be getting her dinner ready, I miss the way she wound herself around my legs, purring furiously when I was trying to get my jeans on in the morning, and I miss her suddenly curling herself into the tightest possible ball, paw over her eyes on the sofa in the evening.
On the plus side, our battered, scarred and heavily repaired fridge magnets are probably now safe.

Cats are deadly creatures, though also beautiful and great fun. You're lucky the aggression manifested itself towards fridge magnets, rather than neighbourhood birds or people in shorts.

Churchill talked to pigs. He said that dogs looked up to you; cats looked down on you; but pigs treated you as equals!

I can sympathise with you, we are without cats for the first time for many year. The house and garden just seem empty without their sleeping or stalking, but then again I can now sit where I please.

It is a truth universally acknowledged that a geek in possession of some fine hardware must be in want of a cat.
I suggest a visit to the nearest branch of Cats Protection League & Tailwavers (though sadly they have dropped the "Tailwavers" bit of their title).
And resign yourself to becoming a mad old lady with cats.

Milan: The little bit of wildness is what I like about cats, I think. M is more or less housebound (beaten up by neighbourhood cats every time she goes out), and we kept her inside for safety when she was here, so the local wildlife wasn't in any danger.
Jonathan Briggs: Yes, I've heard that too. I've also heard pig farmers are the only farm animals that look back at you. Pretty smart animals, actually.
Julian van Geersaele: They do leave a gap.
ThoughtBadger: I think that's going to be the plan, but not until we've moved. The only reason we (or rather, I) haven't had pets for the last 18 years since I left home is because I've lived in rented properties that don't allow pets.
And I'm nearly a mad old lady already, so all I need are the cats

I just came back from a week at the beach house with my parents and their cat, TigerLily. She has developed a new game: tear a hole in the fabric covering the box spring and climb up into the frame and crawl around when Auntie Vicky is trying to sleep. Wretched creature! I love her. Her fur smells so good!
