Beeping hell

In the course of my work, I often need some kind of timer (a stopwatch or a countdown timer, depending on the situation) for my experiments. I bought a photographic timer from Jessops, mainly because it had nice big displays and could run three different countdown intervals at the same time, which is often useful for me. However, the big problem is the noise. It beeps when you press buttons to set things and it beeps continuously when the countdown period expires. Loudly. That's obviously what you want in a darkroom, but its not what you want when you're working with animals.

Yesterday, the beeping went off in my pocket while I had an animal sitting happily on my hand, he was startled, bit me, and then stared at me accusingly for several minutes. Getting bitten (or scratched, or kicked, or defecated on) is basically an occupational hazard as a biologist, so I accept that---if not gladly, then with resignation. But I don't like my animals to be startled. As a drastic measure, I prised open the timer and cut the wires connecting the infernal beeper. The timer is now blissfully silent, but I have to keep a close eye on it to see when the time expires, which isn't ideal.

So I'm looking around for a flexible timer with a vibration alarm that can handle a stopwatch or multiple countdown intervals. I remembered talk on various GTD™ mailing lists and blogs about the Invisible Clock, which seems to do all that and more. I'm thinking about buying one, but it's quite a lot more expensive that other timers, and I'm wondering if it's worth it. Does anyone have any experience of it? Is it worth the money? It would also come in useful for giving talks and lectures, because you can set it for the length of your talk and it buzzes you half way through, five minutes before the end and then when you've got to shut up because you'll be hooked off the stage with one of those comedy giant shepherd's crooks.

You work in a University - wander up to one of the electronic boffins in the canteen, pull out your beepless timer, explain your dilema, and mention the you were thinking of putting a flashing LED in place of the piezo electric sounder, but that you had been told that it wasn't possible - I'd be surprised if it weren't taken from you and returned a couple of days later equipped with a flashing light! Boffins can't resist a challenge!

does your mobile phone not have an alarm/timer on it ? i am sure that if you set your phone to silent and then set the alarm/timer then it will just vibrate in your pocket or flash the screen ?

BSAG -- your problem interested me, so I went looking: it's just a coincidence that the first place I found the piece I was seeking happened to be in Britain.

You already cut the speaker wires. Why not see if you have enough power to run a pager vibrator motor? You can get one here for £1.99. As small as the motor is you may be able to fit it into the speaker space.

Maybe the effort's overkill, but for that little I know that I wouldn't be able to resist the attempt.

Jonathan Briggs: It's true, we can't resist a challenge, but unfortunately few academics have the time to tinker about like that any more. Which is very sad.

leu: It does, but it's fiddly to set, which rules it out when I have to do so quickly.

Jan Mayen: That looks pretty good, and it's quite cheap.

Kevin Gunn: Excellent! The 6mm motor would be even better, and I don't need a strong vibration, really. I'm pretty sure it would fit, but I can always do my usual thing and tape the gaps up with big ugly wodges of gaffer tape! I'll get one and fiddle. If it doesn't work, I'll but the timer Jan linked to.
