Bare feet
For about a week now, I’ve had a dodgy right foot for some unknown reason. My ankle is swollen and the ball of my heel is very sore when pressure is applied, which obviously happens very time I take a step.
Now that the sun has come out, I’ve moved to wearing my very well worn-in sandals (with no socks, naturally). Perhaps it’s because my gait has changed a bit because of my right foot, but I seem to have worn a huge patch of skin off the balls of both feet. The two mile walk home was pretty painful. Stupid feet—-I need an upgrade.

You'll have to go private.....

At the risk of stating the obvious it sounds like you need to see a good chiropodist. They do quite a bit more than just getting rid of Athetes Foot, and Verrucas. If you get the right one they can help with problems similar to those you describe, which may be due to causes that are not particularly obvious. At the least you can get an occasional tune up on your feet, which can be helpful particularly if you do a lot of walking.

Sounds like you may have a bone spur if the pain's quite localized, and it really IS painful.
I have dodgy feet and ankles too. We expect them to do a lot of work for us but they tend to get a bit neglected...

Jonathan Briggs: Yep---no upgrades available on the NHS. Except for hips, if you're prepared to wait a few years.
Keith: I might just do that, but I might see the GP first. My mum has been muttering things about DVTs (deep vein thromboses), so if it carries on, I want to get it checked out.
Pica: I've actually been pretty lucky with my feet so far, which is why I'm so disappointed that they've let me down now.

Excuse me, question of order: If you wear sandals without socks don`t you loose geek points? Just wondering.

I recommend Crocs. (http://www.crocs.com). Very comfortable light and cool, if a tad ugly.

Pica: Turns out that you're right---it seems to be a heel spur, or more properly, plantar fasciitis. Oddly, my Mum had the same thing a few months ago, so she was able to pass on the same advice she got given.
john(j.c.): I think that might be one of those times when the terminological difference between a geek and a nerd is important
ThoughtBadger: Excellent suggestion! I looked them up and noted that there were a couple of shops in Birmingham which stocked them, so I went and tried a pair on after work. They seemed really comfortable (and I noted that they're recommended for plantar fasciitis), so I bought a pair. They're pretty cheap, and if they don't prove comfortable for everyday wear, I'll use them for gardening. I'll let you know how I get on with them.
They are ugly, but then I was never known for my elegance, so there's not a lot to lose! Actually, I think that they have a kind of 'warthog' ugliness which is so extreme that it goes out the other side and becomes rather striking.

I second the recommendation about the crocs. I live in the US but will be travelling to England -- are people wearing crocs over there? (They are hugely popular here right now and I wanted to take my pair with me on this trip, but my husband thought they might be a bit odd in London, Birmingham, etc).

anne: I don't think that I've ever seen anyone wearing them here, but there do seem to be quite a few shops stocking them scattered around. I've been wearing them for a couple of days, and I can honestly say that they're the most comfortable shoes I've ever worn. As for whether you'll get stared at, I think it probably depends what colour your Crocs are. I have navy ones, and no-one has stared at me yet. If yours are the bright red, pink or orange ones, you might get a few glances, but don't let that worry you!

I am pleased my suggestion has been helpful! Here in Brighton they are on sale in a number of shops and my wife has seen a shoe shop in nearby Lewes which has devoted its entire window display to them, so I imagine they will be pretty big here this summer. I'll also have to raise the warthog aesthetic argument with her, as my wife has also forbidden me from wearing them in public!

bsag and thoughbadger Thanks for the feedback. I WILL bring them. I bought a subdued color. I agree, they are the MOST comfy shoes I've ever had. They are kinda ugly but in a trendy funky way (wishful thinking, I'm far from being hip or in-style)!
