Banana Splits

Filed under: Random Mumblings, — bsag @ 05:05 PM

I must be cursed. The other day—-after having randomly heard the theme tune on some TV programme and remembered how much he liked it—-Mr. Bsag found the theme to Banana Splits on the web. As a ‘surprise’ for me, he played it to me very loudly at 6:30 am when I was barely functioning1. There can be few more tenacious soundworms than this song. Somebody make it stop! Then today, one of the builders at work was merrily whistling the tune just outside my office door (as a thoughtful counterpoint to the sound of drilling and hammering). Will I never be free of it?

All together now, “Tra la la, la la la la, Tra la la, la la la la.” Now I’ve infected all of you too. If I’m suffering, everyone should be.

1 I’m sure that there must be legal precedent for this being legitimate grounds for divorce.

Ah... The good ole Banana Splits theme. Heh. By the way, just in case you need even more Banana Splits theme in your life, there's a great, funny, punk version of it created by early Los Angeles punk band "The Dickies". (Wikipedia: The Dickies) I know that it was released way way back in the early 80's (or maybe early 70's) on a 7" single, but I'm sure it's available on CD (or on the 'net somewhere).

I'm sure Mr. Bsag would be thrilled... wink----- Fortunately, I have no idea what you're talking about.

Brian Tanaka: Don't you dare tell him about that! :-D I'd never hear the end of it. Literally.

bitweever: Perhaps you are too young to remember wink Anyway, you're better off, trust me.

I've never heard of The Banana Splits before. Though, I'm mighty interested in The Dickie's version.

Nathan: I'm surprised that none of you North Americans have seen it--I believe it was a US show. It was on in the 1970s, and featured grown men in furry animal suits running around, throwing custard pies and riding in golf carts.

I've never been able to remember the difference between the Banana Splitz theme and Bob Marley's Buffalo Soldier song. This is a terrible thing to admit.

neil: [Sings both songs in head...] I can sort of see it, and it would actually make a good example of 'One Song To The Tune of Another' on 'I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue': the words of the Banana Splits theme (such as they are) to the tune of Buffalo Soldier. It could be a classic.

The uncannily similar sound of these two songs has plagued mankind for decades... but the connection doesn't end there. Do you realize that the abbreviations for both "Banana Splits" and "Buffalo Soldier" are "B.S."? Now, as we all know, "B.S." is commonly understood to stand for "bull shit," (please excuse the vulgarity) and a bull is a very similar animal to a buffalo -- in fact, the male buffalo IS referred to as a "bull!" But the connection still doesn't end there! The word "split" actually rhymes with the word "shit!" (again, please excuse the vulgarity). But there's still more! Bob Marley was born in Jamaica, which is a tropical island, and banana trees grow wild there! He was also known to smoke marijuana in a large cigarette known in Jamaica as a "spliff," a word bearing a remarkable resemblance to the word "split." Most people experience increased appetite when smoking marijuana, an effect commonly known as the "munchies," and anyone who has ever experienced the munchies will tell you that when you're stoned, it's nearly impossible to turn down a banana split! "Banana republic" is a common term for a small government that rules by military force, or the use of SOLDIERS, usually on tropical islands, not unlike Jamaica! Buffalo soldiers fought in the United States, which is itself a republic (contrary to popular misconception, it's not a democracy; just remember the pledge of allegiance: "..and to the REPUBLIC for which it stands..."). The banana splits themselves are animals, not unlike buffaloes and bulls, and they also often fired guns in the show, not unlike soldiers! The list goes on and on, but I will stop here, and leave further investigation up to the blogospherers.
