Apple Genius

Filed under: Technology, — bsag @ 04:11 PM

I had to take Mr. Bsag’s birthday iPod shuffle back to the Apple Store yesterday, because it had developed a fault. I’m still not sure exactly what the problem was, but it seemed as if there was a failed contact somewhere, because it would either suddenly lose power when it had been fully charged, or the buttons would only intermittently respond to presses. I hadn’t realised that returns need to be handled by the Genius Bar, so I had to make an appointment and wait.

Given that the fault is a bit intermittent, I worried that the shuffle would obey Sod’s Law and work flawlessly as soon as it passed into the hands of the genius. It did work for most of the time, but he could see what the problem was, and to his credit he swapped it out for a new unit without any fuss.

While I was waiting, I had a bit of a play with the new iPod nano1. It’s really a thing of beauty, but I think that I’d worry too much about scratching or denting it to enjoy it. In fact, the previous client of my genius was showing him a nano with a definite bend in it. It was quite impressive. My guess is that the owner had put it in the back pocket of his/her jeans, and then sat down hard on a brick wall. Ouch.

1 I think it speaks volumes about the kind of contamination that partners of Apple geeks can suffer that almost the first piece of news that Mr. Bsag gave me when I got back from Brazil (after asking me how I was, of course) was about the nano.↑

I love my iPod nano. Despite reports to the contrary, it really is quite sturdy. Just don't do insanely stupid things with it. I keep mine in my front pocket (preferably the coin pocket), this guarantees that I won't sit or fall backwards on it. When using the coin pocket, I also don't have to remember to careful about keys, coins, pens and other pocket items.

Though, I wanted the black nano, I got the white because I figured it wouldn't showcase abrasions as much as the black. And while I have no scientific proof, anecdotally that seems true. Everyone I know with the rebel black, has started whining about scratches or have been forced to by protective cases.

I only know a few white iPod nano owners, but to date, no complaints. I purchased a number (4) of the iPod shuffles for friends birthdays, but the nano is the first less than 5GB iPod I've purchased, and I love it. The color screen, access to lyrics and cover art, alarms, stop watch, and time for multiple time zones (Chicago, San Francisco, New York, London, Paris, and Wellington, are my selected cities). Plus it's so darn light. My biggest fear is accidently slinging it half way across the street, when trying to pull something out of my pocket. But the headphone cables do act as a nice string.----- allgood2: Interesting. It's a shame about the 'scratchability' of the black nano, because I think it looks a lot nicer than the white one. Anyway, I'm trying not to be tempted. I recently bought a new NewerTechnology NuPower battery for my elderly 2nd generation iPod, as the original one was understandably starting to show its age. I now get at least 15 hours from it, which is pretty good.

I'll second the white recommendation - although I've just ordered one of those invisible screen cover thingies (you 'stick' them on with soapy water apparently) to give mine a little extra protection.

And I also second the biggest fear of losing the damn thing out of my pocket. At least if it does fly off and the headphones become detached it has the good sense to pause the track that was playing!! wink

Gordon: Does it really auto_pause if you pull the headphone plug out? That's very cool!

    Saltation: You can't beat brasso...
