I went to buy a birthday card for my cousin’s one year old daughter at lunchtime today. There were a few cheery looking cards, but a particularly bright design with a “1 Today!” banner along the bottom caught my eye. It had a little board picture book inserted into the top of the card, and I thought it would be a lot more exciting for her than just a card. Then I looked on the back and saw a little sticker which read:

Not suitable for children under 36 months

Really.

You'll find the same warnings on the badges that declare "I am 1" etc.

This particular instruction "not suitable for..." should be treated with the same respect as washing instructions which require your new garment to be gently hand washed by specially trained angels on the full moon with distilled water. In other words, be reasonable - is the child the sort of out of control brainless ninny who sticks everything within reach into their mouth? Some are, most are not.

It´s saturday,It´s grey and rainy outside, I will soon be climbing around in apple trees pruning them and my body already is aching and sore... BUT your post caused me to unexpectedly laugh outloud. I thank you.

You mean I've been making my wife wash my cashmere in didtilled water for 30 years (She is an angel already).

Jonathan Briggs: I know---someone obviously had their brain disconnected when thinking that one out.

David: Though I can vaguely see the point with a badge that has a pin on it. But I would have thought that you can credit most parents with enough intelligence not to leave their little kid alone with it. Common sense is a useful thing.

martin: Hehe, oh that's classic. Yes, I tend to ignore those and stick it in the machine anyway.

john(j.c.): No problem, and I hope that the pruning went OK.

Jonathan Briggs: Hey, why don't you wash your own cashmere? Speaking of which---cashmere, very posh :-D

Just wanted to say that "didtilled" water sounds sooo much more demanding and, perhaps, perverse, than distilled water.

Cashmere is relatively inexpensive if, in late August, you drive along the Hillfoots from Stirling towards the Yetts 'O Muckart, and visit the end of season sales at any one of the many woolen mills that line the route, you can often pick up top quality cashmere pullovers for anything between £20 & £40.

My hands are far too coarse to wash cashmere!
