A man’s radishes

Filed under: Gardening, — bsag @ 04:18 PM

Today is an exciting day! We got our first properly edible crop from the allotment — our first ‘Long Red’ radishes. They are supposed to be long (as the name suggests), but they’re not supposed to have leaves with lots of holes in them. I think something had a bit of a nibble, but the radishes themselves are fine. I can’t tell you how proud I am of this little bunch.

I had a couple for lunch today, very fresh from the ground. They were juicy and crisp, and properly hot and radishy, unlike the the woolly, bland little radishes you get from the supermarket. Or as we say in our house (referencing an obscure Blackadder episode) — A Man’s Radishes.

Which Blackadder episode is that? I re-watched the first four seasons recently and don't recall seeing anything about 'man's radishes.'

Hello there, i couldn't resist congratulating you on the stunning long radishes, as the daughter of a rather horticulturaly obsessed man i'm often grafted into 'alotmentearing' when i pop home to see them. Soon you too i suspect will be in over production of unusual veg territory (when this happens with me my mother hides marrow in all our food) stuffed marrow, marrow curd, marrow in cakes and even marrow gin. I wonder what you could do with 200 radishes? I suspect somewhere there's a pudding involving them! Enjoy the fruits of your labour.

Really nice, you lucky I want to have my own little "plantation", but I have no time for this...

Milan: Hmm. Now that you mention it, it's entirely possible that I mis-remembered the source. My re-writing it was a paraphrase anyway, because the quote I think I remember is 'a man's onions'. Blackadder I or II? Possibly said by Lord Flash Heart? Anyway, it has come to mean (in our house), food which is pretty hot or strong and therefore macho, like hot radishes, mustard, strong onions etc.

Brian Tanaka: They taste great! Hot and peppery (with a slightly delayed effect, so you chew and then go "Hoooo!") and very crunchy.

Jonathan Briggs: Thanks! They won't win any prizes, but they taste good which is the aim of the game.

    Aaron F: Thanks!

Franklin: Quite possibly - we've tried to plant little and often, but I can see us having gluts of various things. Still, I can always share the over production with friends, neighbours or colleagues, so it's not really a problem. It won't go to waste, that's for sure wink

Alla: After the setting up, it doesn't take that much time, and you can produce food on a surprisingly small patch.
