A few changes

p. an example of shadowed textAn email from “D. J. Nightingale(diachrony)”:http://cgi.synchrony.plus.com/blog/ about my blog design prompted me to make some minor but long overdue changes to the design of the page. He pointed out that I could position my images a bit more cleanly using CSS rather than the clunky vspace and hspace attributes I used because I was in a hurry. So, I’ve finally pulled my finger out and got on with it. Things should look a bit neater now. The row of ‘wings open wide’ thumbnails was also in a mess and had been irritating me for ages. Finally, while I was rummaging around in the style sheet I set up shadowed text for the date header above each entry. If you don’t have Safari 1.1, you won’t see it, so I’ve provided the screenshot above to show you folks what you’re missing!

I like your drop shadows. I like drop shadows anyway. Although why we all feel the urge to position small pieces of type a few millimetres above the background is an interesting subject in itself. The craving for texture in a 2D world? Who knows...----- pete: Odd, isn't it? Once I had got used to the shadows behind windows in MacOSX, windows in OS 9 seemed so... flat. I think it makes the interface seem more tangible. Mmm...tangible. That's my word for the day.

It looks good (though I don't have Safari 1.1 yet). If anyone follows the link to my blog in your entry they'll see that mine (at least in terms of structure) was quite heavily influenced by yours ( see http://cgi.synchrony.plus.com/blog/archives/000040.html ) so I was glad to help.

As for the desire for the tangible - I don't know. I just realised that my new site is almost entirely 2D whereas previous sites I've designed have used quite extensive 3D elements. Whatever the reason, the drop shadows look good and as soon as I upgrade to 10.3 I'll add them in wink

Funny that this post should crop up now. It was whilst I was browsing around here recently that I realised just how much I like the clean, simple design/layout of your site which prompted me to change my own (again).

I'm still striving for the ultimate CSS hit, but I'm getting closer with every redesign. I'm tempted to fire up the Mrs' Mac just to witness these drop-shadow thingies, too...

    ...me + mac? Nah.

Jann: Thanks! And you should take a look on the Mac. Go on -- you know you want to...
