1.25 GB baby!

Filed under: Technology, — bsag @ 02:08 PM

When I ordered my 12” PowerBook, I decided that I might as well max out the RAM1, but I had to wait because the extra 1 GB stick was back-ordered. I got it today, and I’m revelling in the most RAM I’ve ever had installed on a computer. The laptop felt pretty fast before, but now it’s really snappy. I do have a legitimate reason for needing all this computing grunt—I’m going to be using digital video pretty extensively in my work, and I know from experience that applications like Final Cut Pro need as much RAM as you can throw at them. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it…

1 You should probably mentally append, “…because I wasn’t paying for it.” to that sentence.

I remember being really impressed when I bought my first computer an Atari ST (showing my age here), beacause it had 512K of RAM. I was particularly impressed because it had about twice as much memory as the IBM mainframe that I worked on only about 3 or 4 years previously, and that ran the whole computing requirements of Portsmouth city council, and had about 15 of us ministering to it.. How naive was I?----- Keith: It's amazing how quickly technology progresses. I remember going inside one of the test Concorde aeroplanes which was on exhibition at an aviation museum. The fuselage was pretty much packed with computing hardware to monitor the plane's performance, but a label said that the combined processing power of all this stuff was less than an average laptop today.

    Dear Bsag,

Where did you source the memory from and do you know if there is much difference between types of memory (i.e. manufacturers)? I find that running PhotoShop and iViewMedia at the same time, as one often wants to do, makes t...i...m...e... slow down significantly on my 512mb-powered PoderBook.

Ideally twin 1Gb sticks. Then "Go Faster" stripes and we'll be there.

    TIA - Jolyon

Jolyon: The IT department bought the RAM for me (and insisted on fitting it), so I don't know what type it is. I've had good experiences with Kensington memory before, but I know that non-Apple brands can be a bit temperamental sometimes, and don't always play nicely with the hardware.

Adding more RAM is supposed to be the single most effective thing you can do to speed your machine up (especially with OS X), and that has certainly been my experience.
