Perl Advent Calendar

Filed under: Technology, — bsag @ 07:13 PM

p. This is so up my street—an “advent calendar(The 2003 Perl Advent Calendar)”:http://www.perladvent.org/2003/ that also gives you geeky Perl tips. What more could a geek girl want for Christmas?

p. The “description(About the Perl Advent Calendar)”:http://www.perladvent.org/about/ of the site for non-Christians is pretty funny too:

Or if you’re not Christian, it’s a site that annually features descriptions of a new module for twenty five days starting on the first of December.

p. I heartily endorse the secular description, but it’s not quite as concise as “Advent Calendar”, is it?

Government Health Warning

p. Forget about “banning drivers from using mobile phones(BBC News - Mobile phone ban comes into effect today)”:http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/3251828.stm without a hands-free set while driving—listening to “I’m Sorry I Haven’t A Clue(BBC ISIHAC site)”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/comedy/clue.shtml while driving ought to be illegal. I’m not sure if there was more water on the windscreen or in my eyes while “Barry Cryer(Profile of Barry Cryer)”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/clue/article/barry.shtml gave an unbelievable rendition of the Beach Boy’s ‘Barbara Anne’ to the tune of a Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto. A close second was “Graeme Garden’s(Profile of Graeme Garden)”:http://www.bbc.co.uk/comedy/clue/article/graeme.shtml rendering of the lyrics of ‘A Windmill in Old Amsterdam’ to the tune of ‘Mr. Tambourine Man’ by Bob Dylan, which was scarily plausible.

p. ISIHAC is a national treasure which should have listed status. When I’m feeling as low and as stressed as I am at the moment—as if I’m trying to run up a very long ‘down’ escalator—it’s one of the few things that can completely pick me up and make me forget about everything I’ve got to do. But make sure you practise safe driving—don’t laugh and drive!
